Dan requirements

1st degree

Lower belt levels may take part in their school’s Kyusho program, but will receive a ‘probationary’ Kyusho Black Belt until they reach Black Belt in their own martial art. The probationary Kyusho Black Belt expires in 3years, so the student needs to have achieved Black Belt in their own style within this time.

To be eligible to grade for 1st degree, the student must have been a member with KA for a minimum of 12 months, from the date membership was administrated by KA.

2nd degree

The average time to grade from 1st to 2nd is 2 years, unless faster promotion (eg 1year) is recommended by a certified Instructor and approved by the KA Board. Member must continue to work on their own art during this time.

3rd degree

The minimum time requirement is two years, to ensure that the Kyusho rank does not exceed member’s own martial arts rank.

4th degree

Students grading to 4th degree, can grade under GM Stewart as Examiner, or in his absence, the KA Board can give a recommendation to GM Stewart and a Panel of three may examine the student.

4th degrees & above may become Examiners, upon confirmation by the KA board.

4th degree examiners may grade students to 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree.

No 4th Examiner may grade his own students. The Examiner may be present at the grading, but requires an external Examiner.

5th & 6th degree Examiner

A 5th & 6th degree Examiner may examiner their own students, ie. Does not require an external examiner like at 4th degree.

Gradings up to and including 8th degree are based on syllabus knowledge, time in rank and successfully completion of the examination for that rank.

Grading for 9th degree and above is awarded to a student based on time in rank and what the student has done for the art of Kyusho. This may include work for the KA Board, and in own systems and seminars.

KA members who are studying Kyusho but do not have a Black belt in a martial art belt system, will obtain “Novice Level” certification upon completion of syllabus criteria. These members can grade no higher than Novice Level 3.

Students under the age of 16 will receive a provisional Black Belt upon completion of syllabus criteria. Upon turning 16, the student will receive the certification up to as many levels as they know. This age limited is a recommendation only, and program age requirements are at the discretion of the Head Instructor.

KA Certified Instructor requirements

All Students wishing to become Instructors need to apply through KA by filling out an application form.

An examiner will be appointed to assess and help the student develop the skills required and the more in depth understanding of the syllabus to ensure a standard level of teaching for KA instructors.

This assessment will involve two 8 hours days not necessarily run consecutively.

Once Instructor certification has been completed, the Instructor is able to teach Kyusho to others.

KA strongly recommends that anyone wishing to give seminars to martial arts styles that are not their own, is a 3rd degree Kyusho Black Belt and Instructor certified as a minimum.  If giving seminars to own style, member must be a 1st degree and above.

Examiners

KA has a set number of Examiners at any given time. Application for new Examiners will only be taken if there is an opening, ie. A current Examiner wishes not to renew membership.

The KA board is to reassess this set number every two years at the KA conference, based on growth of the KA membership.

Examination process

Should a student fail their examination, they may attempt again at the next grading month (either March or October). The student will receive the certificate that was printed at the first attempt, thereby having the date of degree achievement at date of the first attempt..

All examinations shall be held in either March or October. The grading month of March also coincides with GM Stewart’s visits to Australia and the grading may be held at the KA Conference.

All certified KA Instructors are required the Biennial Kyusho Australia Conference, where they will be able to attend seminars and special teaching classes to be able to review their Instructor certification.

If Instructors miss out on this certification renewal, they will need to wait until the next conference to do so. If certification is not renewed, the member is no longer considered an Instructor and his/her students can therefore not be accredited.

Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the KA Board, if valid reason is given for not attending the certification renewal. In this case, the Instructor will need to go through the Board and pay an additional renewal fee.

Kyusho rank and own style rank

A member’s Kyusho rank cannot exceed the member’s own martial arts’ rank by more than 1 rank.

Insurance

All students, Instructors, Examiners and Board Members must renew membership with KA annually.

Each year, affiliated schools must show their certificate of Insurance. This is a requirement to be able to register with KA, as KA or its Board members will not be held liable for any claims such as injury.

Guidelines for Kyusho Program fee structure for schools

KA recommends that the total yearly cost of a Kyusho Program is $1300.00

For example,  26 X $50.00 fortnightly payments. Program lessons are recommended to be 1hour in duration when course is run weekly  but the time may be adjusted accordingly if classes are held fortnightly or monthly.

 Steve Stewart’s DVD’s

It is a mandatory requirement for all Examiners to purchase Steve Stewart’s DVD’s.

Instructors will have the opportunity to purchase the Instructor training DVD upon completion of their Instructor certification, and may only purchase up to the level they are certified in.

The DVD’s should be purchased through KA.

KA Patches

All members receive a KA badge when they join. Clubs are to purchase KA patches from KA, and then sell them onto their students. Clubs may charge their students at their discretion.

DKI and KIA patches will be given to the students when they are awarded their 1st Degree in Kyusho together with International Diploma and KA Belt.

Additional DKI and KIA patches may be purchased only from KA and will only be sold to students and instructors with recognized ranking.

Contacting of Senior Kyusho Practitioners

KA members can contact KA directly with any issue during business hours Monday to Friday.

Unless otherwise directed, only Board members may contact G.M. Steve Stewart.

KA board decisions are final; if a member is dissatisfied with a decision, he/she may appeal to the Board to have the matter discussed again at the next Board meeting where the member may present a case for reconsideration from the board. The decision of the KA board will then be final with no recourse.

Humane Pressure Point Tactics (HPPT)

HPPT is under the KA umbrella and all patches and certificates are to be sourced through KA.

To become eligible to be a HPPT Instructor, the student must be a 1st degree Kyusho Instructor or higher.

KA Instructors must do all 3 HPPT levels (1,2,3) in one go.

All HPPT instructor certification courses and Examinations are conducted by the KA Technical Director.

HPPT Instructors are allowed to conduct seminars on HPPT within their own state. Seminar conducted outside of their state is allowed if it is an extension of their own martial arts style, but it must be presented to the KA Board for approval out of common courtesy.

If someone contacts KA to do a HPPT seminar, the Board will assign a HPPT Instructor. This depends on the state that is requesting the seminar. If the requesting organization has problem with HPPT instructor assigned to conduct the seminar, the KA Board will send a HPPT certified representative from the Board of Directors.
